In all seriousness, I have found this forum to be a challenge. Not with coming up with topics, Ishtar knows I have plenty of them. The problem lies in the standard I want to keep to. They are as follows:
It must be complete: I don’t want to do a vague overview of a technology or threat, or stop before the topic is exhausted. The reader shouldn’t have to find other sources to properly learn what I have written about.
It must be technically competent: I must explore a technical topic thoroughly. No half efforts. This means I must understand the topic thoroughly, which can be intimidating. To thoroughly understand and properly communicate a topic I don’t yet know is a tough hill to climb. Being in the industry it shouldn’t be too large of an ask, but the research must be done outside of my daily and personal obligations, which are significant.
It has to be useful: No rambling about the industry, or pining about the old days. I want people to read and be able to act on the information. So many cyber podcasts do little more than spout platitudes. “People need to secure their endpoints”, or “Companies must implement least privilege”, or “two factor authentication is a must!” How does one do this? Where do they go for more information? Each how-to must be actionable, or else its useless.
That said, I have sketched out a few articles that I just haven’t been able to complete. They cover honeypots, vulnerability scanners, companies that scan the IPv4 space for “research”, an article about the Logical Volume Manager, and a puff piece about a mystery box sent to my office at work. That one won’t be all that useful. For one reason or another I have not been able to complete them, but I promise to do better. Not by lowering my standard, but by spending more time working the articles. Above all, I want this blog to be useful. And I want to be proud of what I have written. I’m not always. Let’s see what the rest of the year brings.
